Saving Money on Food

Saving money is super important when I am relying on my Stafford Loan reimbursement, savings, and $160 per week before taxes (in DC metro, which is pennies really). Between rent, tuition, and car payments, I am barely getting by. So what is a girl to do about eating? According to the Dean of Academic Affairs, I need to do it, and I've grown somewhat fond of it over the past few years. Well here is my tip of the day regarding food- the bulk discount. I am not talking about buying a pallet of of Chees-its from Costco, in fact, don't waste your time and space with Costco. I am talking about going to your local grocery store and asking the Customer Service desk if there is a discount for something by the case.

See my conversation with the Whole Foods Customer Service rep:
Me: Good evening. I saw in your flier that Whole Foods offers a discount of food bought by the case. Does this apply to 365 brand Peanut Butter.
CS Rep: Yes it does. It applies to everything in the store. There is a 10% discount.

See, bad assed. We go through one jar of PB a week at the L homestead, so not having to worry about restocking every week is great, and that 10% discount equaled out to getting a jar for free. So next time you go to the grocery store, ask about a discount for buying by the case. Before you leave though, here are a few tips:
  • Make sure you can use it all up before it goes bad.
  • Make sure you have the space in the homestead to properly store it
  • Make sure you can get it home.
